Dongryul Lee is a composer who often finds inspiration for his music among the spiritual, scientific, and poetic elements of life. His music has been played all across America and Europe by many well-known ensembles including the S.E.M. Ensemble from New York and Boston's Callithumpian Consort. He is currently a teacher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Parastrata is a piece written for five instruments (flute, clarinet, violin, violincello, and pianoforte) inspired by philosophy and mathematics. The work of philosophers Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari on the concepts of smooth and striated spaces heavily influence Parastrata and give it its heading and direction. Another important element that developed throughout the composition of the piece was the idea of "an image of gradually changing harmonic / timbral colors generated by frequency modulation (FM) formula" (https://dongryullee.com/Parastrata-2017). Combining this Fm formula with the elemental number theory, Lee had access to a thousand different "colors" to use and work with to create this bold and wild piece.

Quaerendo Invenietis, the first movement from his larger work Unending Rose for string quartet dives into Lee's microtonal writing. His program notes for the piece state "Unending Rose is my modest prayer, gift and homage à Saint Mary, my own version of the Holy Rosary: a musical rose, made up with pure, pristine, and unprecedented sounds." (https://dongryullee.com/Unending-Rose-2017-2019) He assembles his own form of consonance/counterpoint by creating his own systems of tuning and harmony. For the first movement he writes new concepts for melody, harmony, drama, and scales that are from a new world that is different from our Western world.

Dongryul Lee's creates music that is inventive and exciting. His inspirations although abstract push the boundaries and challenge me to look deeper into my composition design and innovation.
